We all need goals in our lives. They give us a clear path on where we currently are and where we would like to be. By setting short-, medium- and long-term goals, we can create a plan of action for turning our dreams and ambitions into reality. Massive improvements in your quality of life can be achieved by engaging in this process and reviewing your goals each and every day.
You do not need to create a complicated plan. However, there are some factors that are vital to creating a sustainable goal action plan, as follows:
People often stop pursuing their goals because they have made them too vague. It is much better to be as specific as possible when creating your goals.
Too vague: I want to travel more.
Specific: I want to plan a short road trip to [specific location] on December 11th.
You should break down your goal action plan into short-, medium- and long-term goals. Short-term can be a length of time anywhere from one day to a couple of months. These goals give you something to pursue in the present and are smaller pieces of your more long-term goals.
Medium-term goals can range anywhere from three months to five years, while long-term goals can be anything that may take five or more years to achieve. Instead of having one large goal that seems far off in the horizon, by setting and achieving short-term goals, you will build momentum and see actual progress.
Create Incentives and Deadlines
The best way to keep yourself accountable is to create some sort of incentive to ensure that you are constantly striving towards your goals. You should set a time frame for all of your goals (e.g., I want to have progressed to walking one mile every morning by the 31st of December). Incentives can be either rewards (e.g., I completed my goal of doing all my exercises this week so I can treat myself to a meal at my favorite restaurant) or punishments (e.g., Each day that I do not floss my teeth, I have to give $10 to my friend).
Believe me, when you have something on the line, you will try extra hard to ensure that you meet your goals on a daily basis.
Create an Action Plan
Once you have written down all of your goals, you can now create your action plan. For each goal, break down in a clear and concise way what exact steps you are going to take in order to achieve the goal, what incentives are in place for this goal, and what the very next step is that you need to take.
By following these steps and striving to achieve your goals each day, no matter how small they may be, you will achieve a feeling of fulfillment. Instead of simply being a passenger, you can take the initiative and make real and rewarding progress towards your life goals.
